X Factor’s New Judges – BBC 5 Live – Collette Walsh

Collette Walsh – 18 July 2018

I was on BBC 5 Live last night chatting about the new judging panel for ITV’s X Factor.

ITV Xfactor 2018It followed a grand reveal of the new judges at a press conference in London. New for 2018 is singer Robbie Williamson, his wife Ayda Field and One Direction’s Louis Tomlinson.

I actually see the wisdom in Simon Cowell’s choices despite the criticism fired at the new line up. Louis T is ideal for X Factor – he’s been through the process! He is also keen to mentor and let’s face it, the platform of prime time Saturday night TV will do his solo career no harm. Kerching!

The same for Mr and Mrs partnership Robbie and Ayda – they are good friends of Simon’s and again, this is great exposure for both of them. Robbie knows he’s not ’19 forever’ and a top TV gig like this, now he’s a dad and in his 40s, is actually a no-brainer. Kerching! £££££…

Teasing aside, he will be very good for the show in terms of entertainment and his brilliant insight into the demands of being a performer – so all in all a great choice. I am sure Ayda will not mind the accusations that she’s got no real musical credentials – working with her husband will be a blast and will certainly open doors for her. Kerch…!

I find her very natural and likable on Loose Women (ITV) and for X Factor she will make a good devil’s advocate.

The show itself has desperately needed a fresh injection of faces and format whatever the case. Viewing figures have been shocking as the popularity of Strictly Come Dancing has stolen the audience for Saturday night family entertainment. Let’s see if this new judging panel line-up boosts ratings!
