america unchainedThis week’s book – Dave Gorman – America Unchained

Hi there – just a quick update for the Travel Book Club fans – this week we’re reviewing America Unchained by comedian and writer Dave Gorman.

Gorman charts his travels around America in pursuit of ‘real’ America – the America of independant shops, hotels and even gas stations – totally avoiding chain or multi-naitonal, corporate, branded USA.

I enjoyed this mainly because it is a really clever and original USA travel book. Having done a hilarious drive up the the east of coast of the USA many years ago and having just returned from the states for a holiday, I have to agree with Gorman that the USA is saturated with chains of Starbucks and the like … a part of me, like him, yearns for the USA of Little House on the Prairie (well not quite as quaint as that) and for what he calls ‘ma and pa’ shops, diners and so on.

It’s a fun read and also quite informative – do tune in and grab a copy of the book (the show repeated throughout the week, so plenty of time).

HEADS UP! next week’s book is a cracker – prepare to laugh out loud and get a copy of You Are Awful (But I Like You): Travels Through Unloved Britain by the very funny Tim Moore.
